Grey vinyl storage building with white double doors and two windows in a fenced back yard

A storage building only earns its keep if what you put inside it stays dry and pest free, so most of the decisions we make are about keeping water and critters out, not just putting up four walls. We start by talking about what is actually going in there, lawn equipment needs a wide door and a solid floor for a mower, seasonal storage might just need shelving and a small footprint, and anything electronic or valuable changes how we think about ventilation and moisture.

We set the building on a proper base, either a gravel pad with a treated wood floor system or a concrete slab depending on what you need and what the ground allows. A building set directly on dirt or a poorly graded pad is how you end up with a floor that rots from underneath or water pooling against the walls after a storm, which is common with the heavy rain we get here.

Roofing and siding matter more than people expect on a small structure. A cheap roof on a storage unit fails the same way a cheap roof on a house does, just faster, because there is less overhang and less flashing to begin with. We build the roof pitch and overhang to shed water away from the walls and door, and we frame the door opening so it does not sag or bind after a year of use.

How it runs

  1. Assess needs We talk through what is going inside so the size, door width, and floor type match the use.
  2. Site prep We level and prepare the base, gravel pad or concrete slab depending on the plan.
  3. Frame and floor The floor system and walls go up first, built to the load the space needs to handle.
  4. Roof and siding Roofing goes on with enough pitch and overhang to move water away from the structure.
  5. Doors and finish work Doors get hung and adjusted, and any shelving or ventilation gets added last.
